This photograph shows a first nations family in the foreground with a trestle bridge under construction in the background. The location is near the "St. Mary" railway station at the southeast edge of the The Kainai Nation Blood 148 reservation. The station is just off to the right of the photo. The St. Mary river is just off to the left of the photo.

Construction of the Crow's Nest line by the Canadian Pacific Railway started in 1897 and was completed in 1898. On this section of track (from Lethbridge to Macleod), there were 20 wooden deck bridges with a total length of 12,063 feet. In the background of the photo is one of the Howe Truss bridges being assembled - the portions of the bridge were premanufactured at Macleod and transported out to the sites to be assembled.

This section of the line was closed in 1910 with the opening of the new route between Lethbridge and Macleod (via the High-Level Viaduct).
