The person interviewed in this Part Two is Robin B. Hayward. When he was leaving high school, his father offered him two choices the Royal Military College at Kingston or to become a lawyer. Eschewing both, Robin chose instead to join HMS Conway, a training ship in England which provided trained officers for both the Merchant and the Royal Navy. His first fighting ship was HMS Nelson one of the two British Battleships truncated by the limits of the Washington Treaty. Soon he is joined by his school chum Dick Leir but here their war careers part as Hayward goes on to serve in Mountbatten's destroyer flotilla and then returns to Canada. After a couple of short stints in HMCS Drumheller and commanding HMC Fairmile Q056, Hayward joins the newly commissioned Tribal Class destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, operating first in sorties to Russia and later in the English Channel. Athabaskan was one of the four Canadian Tribals which formed the core of the 10th Destroyer Flotilla and it was during one of these sorties on 29 April 1944 when Athabaskan was sunk. Hayward's story is mostly about that sinking and the rescue, capture and incarceration of those who survived.~Readers seeking more information might well read Len Burrows and Emile Beaudoin's magnificent account "Unlucky Lady" the Life and Death of HMCS Athabaskan, from which this video draws much material.~Hayward's description of the treatment of prisoners by the Germans is that it was harsh but never approaching the terrible savagery meted out by the Japanese. As he notes, the survivors of the Athabaskan were held in captivity for a year, this being at the time when the Germans were rapidly recognizing their impending defeat. <37mn>
