Profile of landscape painter Doris Jean McCarthy, born in Calgary, Alberta. Her career is explored through stills, narrative and footage of her work, her art expeditions and re-created events in her life. Noteworthy footage of: McCarthy demonstrating and discussing her approach to art; visiting the Central School of Art and Design (England) where she once studied; and on an expedition to the Badlands (Alberta). Dramatized "flashback" sequences of McCarthy assisting at children's art classes taught by Arthur Lismer (Group of Seven), her former instructor at Ontario College of Art (1926); a 1937 expedition to Maligne Lake (Jasper Park, Alberta); and building her own house in 1944, a symbol of her independance and her "favorite work of art".
