Part two of two-part television documentary hosted by Lovat Dickson that traces the rise of the Massey family in Canada from its rural, Methodist beginnings to its prominence in business, politics and the theatre. The lives of several generations of Masseys are illustrated through dramatized scenes described in voice-over by actors representing family members. In footage and stills supported by narrative, the evolution of the Massey Manufacturing Company through mergers with domestic and American rivals to become Massey-Harris-Ferguson and then Massey-Ferguson, and its success in international competition, are linked to the age of mechanization, electricity, advanced capitalism, and World War I. Changes in the nature of the business, with attendant labour problems, and the roles of Hart Massey and his sons Charles, Chester, Walter and Fred are dramatized. Additional dramatic scenes include: Fred and Walter preparing for a trip around the world to sell Massey machinery; the marriage and travels of Lillian Massey (Hart's daughter), her participation in the Fred Victor Mission House and her contribution of a domestic science building to Victoria College in Toronto. Photographs and narrative illustrate the careers of: Vincent Massey, Canada's first native-born Governor General and Raymond Massey, internationally known actor. Additional noteworthy stills include: photos of family members; international awards won by the company at a Paris Exhibition in 1889; festival programs from the early days of Massey Hall, established by Hart; photos of the original and the modern Massey Hall; photos of Hart House at the University of Toronto; Walter Massey's photographs of a Chautauqua centre and of an experimental farm in Dentonia Park, Ontario established by Walter Massey. <60mn>
