Science program hosted by David Suzuki which chronicles the life cycle of five species of Pacific salmon in Canada and the damage to salmon caused by human ignorance and greed. Suzuki's narration accompanies footage of Chinooks, Pinks, Sockeyes, Cohos and Chums in their natural habitats, in hatcheries, and during their seaward migration. The decimation of salmon by overfishing and the destruction of salmon runs is illustrated through stills of: a logging dam built in 1903 at the mouth of the upper Adams River; and the 1913 blasting by Canadian National Railways which triggered a landscape that nearly blocked the Fraser River; along with footage of 1920s salmon traps; the Columbia River, whose runs were decimated by hydro dams; and modern seiners that could wipe out salmon runs if left unregulated. Efforts to rejuvenate the salmon are noted through footage of hatchery experiments, breeding, and artificial transportation to the sea by helicopter; the efforts of students in Vancouver to restore a former run by incubation of Chum salmon eggs and release of fry; a fish farm using scale analysis; and a hatchery in B.C., which has steadily re-built the Chinook runs. Noteworthy footage includes: the metamorphosis of eggs to fry; salmon leaping over rapids and gathering to return to their fresh-water birthplace (where they will spawn and die); and computers at a salmon farm in Oregon controlling the salmon's environment. <60mn>
