As part of the war effort, Mary Brown, an American, writes letters to Paul Bergot, a Belgian soldier fighting on the German front. Paul is captured by the Germans, however, and loses track of Mary. After the war, he emigrates to the United States in the company of Zandow the Great, a professional German weightlifter he has met during his captivity in Germany. Paul looks everywhere for Mary and finally finds her in a small town. They declare their love for each other, but Mary's father, Parson Brown, objects to Paul because he works in the music hall. Paul is instrumental in running a gang of bootleggers out of town, however, and Mary's father relents, giving her his permission to marry Paul.
