Radio program commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, using excerpts of CBC radio programs. Prime Minister John Diefenbaker gives a brief history of the public and national broadcasting system from 1932. He recalls the Christmas broadcasts of King George V, broadcasts from World War Two and the national news service of the CBC. He describes the system as a compromise between complete monopoly by the government, as in the United Kingdom, and the private enterprise system in the United States. He says that "I see radio as a public trust". He also says "It must be free of political direction. Equally so, it must be free of political partisanship". Diefenbaker says that "The CBC contributes to national development; indeed, it has become an expression of our nationhood". He extends congratulations to the CBC on its anniversary. Next is the theme from the CBC radio program BOX SEATS TWO-FIFTY, followed by ACTION : AULD LANG SYNE and J. Frank Willis' introduction to the program. Herb May introduces Samuel Hersenhoren playing a medley of numbers from 1936: The Very Thought of You; A Sleepy Lagoon; Begin the Beguine; I'm in the Mood for Love; My Romance; and Zing Go The Strings of My Heart. The medley is arranged by Johnny Dobson and called The Book of '36. Charles Jennings gives an historical note on the founding of the CBC. He introduces Leonard Brockington. Brockington gives a speech on the achievements and history of the CBC and looks forward to its future. He talks about the aims of the CBC in 1936. Followed by the song We Thank Thee Our Father For All Thou Hast Given. Edward Devlin introduces Geoffrey Waddington playing one of Alexander Chuhaldin's arrangements for Melodic Strings. Herb May mentions programs from 1936 and introduces the comedy team of Woodhouse and Hawkins, doing Woodhouse and Hawkins in Nitwit Court. Willis introduces Jacques Des Baillets from Montreal, the CBC's first bilingual announcer.~Des Baillets introduces the Trio Lyrique (Anna Malenfant, Lionel Daunais and Ludovic Huot, with Allan MacIver at the piano) singing Les Filles du Roi. Alan McFee introduces an excerpt from a German performance in 1937 of the Horst Wessel song, following by shouts of Heil Hitler. McFee introduces a clip consisting of the introduction of the play Forgotten Footsteps. Lamont Tilden talks about Percy Faith in the 1930s. Samuel Hersenhoren conducts Faith's 1936 arrangement of Temptation. Willis talks about the 1939 Royal Tour, followed by an excerpt of the Prime Minister's welcome to the King and Queen at Wolfe's Cove and the King's reply. Next is an excerpt of the farewell to the King and Queen during the 1939 tour. Willis continues and comments on the political situation in 1939. Clip of Neville Chamberlain's declaration of war. Lorne Greene describes his part as a news commentator early in the Second World War. Ernest Bushnell talks about his service in London early in the war and pays tribute to the British Broadcasting Corporation during the war. He extends best wishes to the CBC. Willis describes the CBC London Unit during the war. John Kannawin, head of the London bureau from 1942 to 1945, is introduced. He describes the wartime activities of the CBC staff in London, mentioning the recording of bomb blasts by the CBC's Art Holmes. This is following by some of Holmes' recordings. Kannawin introduces a clip of CBC correspondent Matthew Halton reporting from Ortona during the war. Kannawin then speaks some more. Austin Willis describes Rupert Caplan's programs to launch Victory Loan Drives, followed by an excerpt from a show. Willis introduces Katherine Hepburn. Audience applauds performance of "There'll Always Be an England". Willis introduces a clip of Dwight D. Eisenhower annoucing the D-Day invasion of Europe. De B. Holly introduces a clip of Stanley Maxted reporting from Europe during the war, about the landing of supplies.~Clip of Winston Churchill's VE-Day announcement. Willis introduces an excerpt of Len Peterson's play "VE Day Comes to Chicotin, Alberta". Elwood Glover introduces a program from the Vancouver series From Leicester Square to Old Broadway The clip consists of "There's a Good Time Coming". Clip from the Halifax program Harmony Harbour, introduced by Glover. The excerpt is Shenandoah, sung by the Acadian Male Quartet. Glover introduces an excerpt from the Toronto program Music for Canadians. He next introduces Andrew Allan, who talks about the CBC radio drama series Stage 44. Allan produced the Stage series for 12 years. Excerpt of Lucio Agostini conducting his musical composition for The Picture of Dorian Gray. Willis introduces Alphonse Ouimet, who talks about the CBC's broadcasting policy. John Rae introduces some theme songs from 25 years of CBC broadcasts, arranged by Johnny Dobson. <90mn>
