Lawren Stewart Harris, Canadian artist and member of the group of Seven, is profiled in this documentary hosted by Jan Rubes. Still photographs of Harris (who died in 1970) and of his family and childhood; voice-over narrative by Martha Henry; quotations of Harris read by William Hutt; and interviews with contemporaries provide glimpses' into Harris' personal background & development as an artist. Stills of Harris' landscape painting are juxtaposed with scenes of Algoma and the Lake Superior area, the Rockies and the arctic, where acost of his early work was done. The artist's quest for "a union between the world of nature and the realm of the spirit" is explored through examples of his later work as it evolved toward the abstract. Harris' belief in theosophy; his controversial relationship with his second wife and fellow painter, Bess Hauser , and his development as a monobjective artist are discussed in interviews with (among others): Prof. Churchill Lathrop of Darmouth College, New Hampshire; architect Arthur Erikson; musician Harry Adaskin; and artists Doris Speirs and Jack Shadbolt. Noteworthy footage includes: the homes and studios of Lawren and Bess Harris in New Mexico and Vancouver; Wassily Kandinsky creating an abstract painting; and a final superimposed image of Harris against mountain peaks. <60mn>
