In this program hosted by Jan Rubes, a classical and jazz version of Bach's "Magnificat in d Major" are performed by The Tudor Singers and the Tafelmusik orchestra, directed by Wayne Riddell, and the Swingle Singers and band, directed by Eric Robertson. Alternating footage of each group emphasizes contrasting versions of various passages of the same piece. The traditional version is presented through shots of: The Tudor Singers and Tafelmusik orchestra performing; tenor Mark DuBois and sophrano Stephanie Bogle demonstrating and discussing vocal parts; John Fanning singing and discussing technique with director Riddell; close-ups of the choral and instrumental sections and various instruments being played; and vocalist Catherine Robbin in a solo practice session. The jazz version is presented through shots of: the Swingle Singers and band in the studio, practising and discussing technique; lead vocalists Ann Mortifee and Bobby McFerrin demonstrating rhythym in vocal passages and expressing their ideas; and close-ups of various band members during a concert. Additional noteworthy footage includes: performers preparing to go on stage; Moe Koffman playing [flute and saxophone]; Koffman explaining why Bach is so adaptable to a jazz beat; and Erica Goodman, harpist, referring to Bach as "the original improvisor." <60mn>
