THIS WAS JAPAN is about Japan after the Second World War. This film is presented through montage as the offscreen narrator discusses Japanese culture in isolation before 1853, when Westerners made contact. Peasants are shown working on farmland. A look back at Japanese culture and history over the past eighty years is juxtaposed with footage of people working in factories while the offscreen narrator tells of how the Japanese quickly learned of the scieries and modern technologies. There is discussion and footage illustrating the belief in Shinto and the Samurai and how this led to rapid military growth. Women and young children are also seen taking part in the military. Footage of the Emperor Matarasu and the leading politicians at the time are interspersed with footage of marching Japanese and German troops. The film shows some battles with the Japanese in the air and the British at sea. At the end, a British naval force is shown while the offscreen narrator discusses how the British and their Allies will make efforts to bring peace and democracy to Japan. <11mn 39s>
