Unedited interview shot in England for the CBC television series THE DAYS BEFORE YESTERDAY : STRUGGLE FOR NATIONHOOD, of Alan John Percivale Taylor, history professor, historian and Honourary Director of the Beaverbrook Library. He talks about: R.B. Bennett's early career as a teacher; his parent's wish that he come a preacher and his father's desire for him to be a lawyer; Max Aitken following Bennett to Calgary; Aitken running Bennett's political campaign; Bennett's disappointment in Aitken's becoming a tycoon; how Bennett benefitted from Aitken's financial acumen; Aitken's speculation on the stock market; Aitken's going to England and Bennett's taking care of his Canadian interests; Aitken's friendship with Robert Borden in World War One, Borden's putting Aitken in charge of Canadian military affairs overseas and the strain this put on Aitken's relationship with Bennett; the criticism of Clifford Sifton by Bennett and Borden; Bennett's re-entry into politics; Beaverbrook's support for William Lyon Mackenzie King in the 1930 election because of King's support for Empire Free Trade; Aitken's upset that he was not invited to the Imperial Economic Conference of 1932; Aitken's failure to understand the Canadian nationalism of the day; Aitken's belief that Canada should only produce raw material; Aitken's failure to understand that Bennett had to deal with French-English relations in Canada; Aitken's praise for Bennett's efforts to save the Canadian dollar during the Depression; the disapproval by Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain of Bennett's support for economic nationalism at the 1932 Imperial Economic Conference; Aitken's support for protection of the agriculture industry in the United Kingdom; Aitken's feelings about Bennett's decision to move to England; Aitken's arranging to have Bennett appointed to a position in the Ministry of Aircraft Production; Bennett's final years at his home in England and Bennett's disillusionment with England.
