Interview of Alastair Francis Buchan, son of John Buchan (Lord Tweedsmuir). He talks about: his first arriving in Canada in November 1935; his feelings of loneliness at the time; his first impression of Canada as a French-English country, and his later realization that other cultures also played a factor in shaping the country, such as Irish and German; his father's love of travelling in Canada; the friendship between Lord Tweedsmuir and William Lyon Mackenzie King dating back to 1923; Tweedsmuir not being King's first choice as Governor General, because King did not agree with Tweedsmuir's vision of a union of all the English-speaking communities along the Atlantic; the sense that the political actions of Lord Byng still cast a shadow on Tweedsmuir; the falling out between King and Tweedsmuir in 1936 over collective security; King's isolationist views, particularly in relation to the stance over Abyssinia; Lester B. Pearson's belief in collective security, as reflected in his role in the Suez crisis; and admiration for King's political skill in governing a difficult nation. Buchan also talks about: anxieties over the affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, the publicizing of the affair in the American news media and Canadian disapproval; Tweedsmuir's role in helping to keep King informed of developments in the situation; Alastair Buchan's recollection of King as being very patient and knowledgeable about politics; King's understanding of Quebec; Alastair Buchan's boyhood memories of the Depression in Canada; King's mysticism and devotion to his mother; Alastair Buchan's recollection of King as being pear-shaped; King's interest in Canadian history; and King's regard for the United Kingdom.
