Film of part of the visit of British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, Edward, the Prince of Wales, and Prince George to Canada. It shows part of the visit to Ottawa, Quebec City, Montreal, Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Toronto. Reel 1 begins with their visit to Ottawa, showing people milling about on lawns; people in a receiving line in an outdoor location, possibly Rideau Hall; Prince George and the Prince of Wales greeting people; Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and members of his cabinet are present; the Prince of Wales and other dignitaries on a dais; large flag on front on dais in Ottawa; intertitle reads: Mayor Balharrie presents the civic address of welcome”; abundant foliage decorates the stage, obscuring the faces of the Prince of Wales and other dignitaries; Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King shown addressing the crowd; shots of large crowd; intertitle reads “The Prime Minister Welcomes the Right Honourable Stanley Baldwin”; Baldwin handed a scroll; unveiling a statue; intertitle reads: “Thousands witness the dedication and unveiling to the monument of Sir Wilfrid Laurier on Parliament Hill”; shots of dais at the ceremony to unveil the statue; William Lyon Mackenzie King is seated on a platform at the ceremony; William Lyon Mackenzie King delivers address of dedication as a man seated at a table on the platform writes; Prince George and the Prince of Wales on the platform; intertitle states that HRH the Prince of Wales “unveils the splendid monument”; intertitle reads: “Canada Welcomes Royal Princes and Britain’s Prime Minister”, followed by the credit which indicates that this was produced by the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau, Department of Trade and Commerce, Ottawa, Ontario; the Prince of Wales, Stanley Baldwin and other dignitaries greeted by the Governor General and Viscountess Willingdon; a crowd outside the Chateau Laurier hotel in Ottawa; shots of surrounding buildings such as the train station and the Daly Building are visible, as is Rideau Street; crowd in front of the train station (some shots are blurry); the Prince of Wales in an army uniform and Prince George in a Royal Navy uniform; an intertitle states that on the Plaza (an open area near Union Station in Ottawa) the Prince of Wales (called the heir apparent) inspects the guard of honor composed of war veterans (this footage is dark); more shots of the crowd and visitors at the Plaza; high angle shot of the Prince of Wales and Governor General Willingdon; an intertitle states that thousands line the route from the train station to the Parliament Buildings; horses escort the motorcade carrying the visitors to the Parliament Buildings; shot of Union Station from another angle; and more shots of crowds. Reel 3: This begins with the following notation printed through on the leader: "Prince at Quebec Roll 6 - NFB-1920-N-31-3" and consists of: more scenes of a crowd watching one of the golfers; crowd standing around an open car; the Princes in a motorcade; motorcade pulling up to the steps of a building; a clergyman on the steps; a man carrying a movie camera on a tripod is visible in the crowd; other cameramen visible; the Princes walk among the crowd; police officer in the large crowd; and scene goes dark. [At this point the film leader says Prince Wales Quebec Roll 4": the dignitaries on board a Canada Steamship Lines ship travelling to Montreal; tugboat with the name Simard Fils follows; visit to a factory; on top of a tram car; and shots of various Montreal buildings. Footage identified on leader as Prince of Wales at Montreal Roll 7: : a motorcade stops and the Prin ces get out; the Princes go aboard a ship and more shots of crowds. Footage identified on leader as Prince Wales Montreal Roll 3: the Prince of Wales wearing a kilt; the Prince of Wales salutes; Prince George in naval uniform; Lieutenant Governor Perodeau; Royal 22nd Regiment guard of honour; and the Prince of Wales going up stairs, into a building with other dignitaries. Footage identified on leader as Prince Wales Quebec Roll 5: close-up of William Lyon Mackenzie King; the Prince of Wales and others walk down a short gangplank; the Prince greets a military official; and the Prince of Wales saluting and inspecting some soldiers; and s ; getting into a carriage. This is the end of reel 3. Reel 4, identified on the leader as The Peace Bridge Roll 2, starts with: cars going over a bridge; motorcade escort; passing under a stone gate; marching troops (footage is dark); shot of a bridge; shot of a motion picture cameraman in a light-coloured suit, filmed from behind, cranking a camera on a tripod as he films Niagara Falls. The text printed through on the leader says this is Roll 5 Niagara Falls and Peace Bridge. There are more shots of Niagara Falls; people in fancy dress; Niagara Falls and tramway beside it; crowds. The text Peace Bridge Roll 4 is printed through on leader and the following footage shows: large billboard for the International Peace Bridge and view of the approach to the bridge on the occasion of the official opening of the bridge linking Buffalo, New York and Fort Erie, Ontario by the Prince of Wales; the Prince of Wales inspecting troops; motion picture cameraman in background; Prince of Wales speaks to someone and walks toward camera; car travelling on bridge; the British visitors meeting an American delegation on the bridge; longshot of people leaving building and getting into car; motion picture cameraman and still photographers near large building, possibly a train station; train platform; locomotive. "Peace Bridge Roll 3 " is printed through on the leader of the following shots: crowd near car; Prince of Wales and crowds; group of dignitaries walking toward camera; one man in the group makes a hand gesture to tell people to get out of the way; and a motorcade departing. 1. Crown material over 50 years - copyright expired.~2. On 23 July 1927 Prime Minister Baldwin, Prince George and Edward, Prince of Wales, left Britain on board the ship Empress of Australia to begin the visit to Canada. They arrived in Quebec on July 30. They visited Montreal on August 1 and Ottawa on August 2. The Prince of Wales opened Union Station in Toronto on August 6. The Prince of Wales and U.S. Vice President Dawes opened the International Peace Bridge, linking the U.S. and Canada at Fort Erie, Ontario and Buffalo, New York, on August 7. The British visitors left for Western Canada on August 8 and they left for Britain, aboard the ship Empress of Scotland, on September 7.~3. There is no head title on the film, but the probable head title appears out of sequence following the unveiling of the statue to Laurier~4. Much of the footage in the first sequence, at the outdoor reception is dark, shot from too far away to distinguish faces and there are few clear shots of the princes. Some of the footage is also indistinct because of poor focus and contrast and there are soft-focus and dark sequences at intervals later in the film.~5. Intertitle about the unveiling of the Laurier statue is printed backwards in the video copy.~6. Length and order of scenes on the reel indicates that this footage is assembled out of the correct order. ~7. Roll numbers mentioned in the description are on the film leader.
