CS [in Fortier's handwriting] ("14"). The writer acknowledges the addressee's letter [to ?Signay, of 28 April 1828; see C 181-182]. Although the addressee has found some faults in the clergy's appeal to be sent to the King [George IV] asking that the good of the Montréal Seminary be protected [see the final appeal, dated ?27 December 1818; see SOCG 552], the writer is certain that it might convince the British ministers, "qui savent fort bien l'influence que ce Clergé a sur le Canada", to abandon the agreement reached by Roux and Huskisson, the Secretary of State for [War and] the Colonies. This agreement, that entails the end of the Seminary, is opposed even within the Seminary itself.

As for expenditures related to future negotiations, the writer might ask the bp. of London, [Yorke] Bramston [recte bp. of Usula, vicar apostolic in the London district], to file the appeal, but £250/300 will still be necessary. Since the Québec Seminary is already indebted, and the writer himself has begun the building of the [Saint-Jean-de-] Nicolet Seminary, the above sum must be provided by the addressee. Certified and signed by Fortier. Notes (letter probably addressed to Le Saulnier).
