C. The writer had briefly rejoiced at the felicitous ending of the dispute relating to the [Sulpician] Seminary [of Montréal], brought about by the Nuncio in Paris [Lambruschini]'s intervention with the King of France [Charles X] and the latter's request to the British government. Yet the bp. of Telmissus [Lartigue, on 15 August 1828; see SOCG 547] and [the abp. of] Québec [Panet, on 31 January 1829; see SOCG 548], who opposed the accord, soon wrote [to Cappellari], and sent two priests [Maguire, Tabeau] to Rome to inform PF of their reasons. In fact, a number of ecclesiastical institutions in Canada enjoy the same feudal rights of the Seminary. Were this to forfeit its feudal rights, then the British government could well attempt to deprive all other institutions of their own feudal rights.

Their very existence could then be threatened. The British government has been asked to reconsider the accord, and the addressee is invited to abstain from any further deal with the British government.
