Excerpts from three items. [1] Poynter to Gradwell, London, 20 January 1826. Since gazettes from Québec reached London that morning with the news of Plessis's death, occurred on 4 December [1825], a coadjutor to Plessis's substitute [Panet] should be appointed immediately; during the past week the writer met with Bathurst's undersecretary, Horton, to whom he reported that bulls appointing [A.] McDonell bp. of Upper Canada [recte of Kingston] were imminent, and that the others (Lartigue, [A.B.] MacEachern, [Provencher]) should be made full bp.s as well, as contained in a letter he received from MacEachern.

[2] Poynter to [Gradwell], [London], 23 January [1826]. The writer encloses a confirmation of Plessis's death [of 12 December 1825; see SOCG 428], a letter from Panet [of 12 December 1825; see SOCG 428] and his appointment as the latter's procurator [dated from Québec, 21 December 1825]; he also received Panet's letters for the Pope [Leo XII, of 20 December 1825; see SOCG 432] and for PF [recte Della Somaglia, of 21 December 1825; see SOCG 433] applying for a coadjutor, and a letter from Lartigue [last known letter is of 13 December 1825] who is troubled by the Sulpicians and by Rome's indecision; on the day after he will meet with Bathurst, who asked to see him.

[3] Poynter to [Gradwell], [London], 24 January 1826. The writer forwards Panet's letters for the Pope and PF; he explains that his age (73), the necessity to stop possible troubles and to counter the enemies of Lartigue's appointment, and the fact that he could not suggest a slate of three candidates, due to the [British] government's thoroughness in knowing "all that is done there [in Canada]", made the publication of Signay's choice as coadjutor necessary.
