C. With reference to [Sambucy's] M submitted to PF [before August 1823; see SOCG 307], probably unknown to the Montréal Sulpicians, the writer explains that [1] The goods of the Jesuits had been considered a property of the government since 1760, and Amburst [Amherst] claimed them as his own when the last Jesuit [Casot] died in 1800; [2] A pension of £200 was granted to the bp. [of Québec] from 1775 to 1813, when it was raised to £1,000 by Prevost, Governor-in-Chief [of British North America, Lower Canada and Prince Edward Island], in view of the clergy's attitude during the War of 1812 against the United States, not on account of any deal involving former Jesuit properties;

[3] The appointment of the writer to the Legislative Council [of Lower Canada] as "Evêque de l'Eglise Catholique Romaine de Québec", obtained by Governor General Sherbrooke [Governor-in-Chief of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Lower Canada] from the Prince Regent, now George IV, was an achievement long wished for; [5, recte 4] The writer is not aware of [E.] Burke's opposition to the above appointment, although he would certainly have accepted the same in Nova Scotia; [6, recte 5] The writer's letter of [20 August] 1819 to Bathurst [see SOCG 353] shows that he is not trying to take possession of the goods of the Sulpicians, and explains their opposition to the bp. of Telmissus [Lartigue].
