LS. The writer confirms that there was no danger involved in his accepting a seat in the Legislative Council [of Lower Canada] in 1817 and points out that [J.-B.-]C. Bédard's letter [to Roux, of 1 June 1824; see SOCG 346] shows that the Montréal Seminary and its Sulpician Superior [Roux] are to blame for the troubles. Furthermore, their lawyer [O'Sullivan], who should currently be in Rome, is an Irishman who was crippled at a duel that took place on Easter day, [3 April] 1819. He asked Poynter, bp. of Alia, [possibly in his letter of 25 March 1825; see SOCG 297] to inform Rome of his favourable opinion re the erection of a bishopric in Upper Canada which would be separate from Québec, as requested by the bp. of Rhesaina [McDonell].
He also encloses a report of the past year [?of 3 July 1824; see SOCG 402] received from the bp. of Juliopolis [Provencher], asking for some faculties and indulgences, and recalls that a similar request [?of 17 December 1823, to Caprano; see SOCG 351] was received two years before from the bp. of Telmissus [Lartigue], which was never answered. The writer, who acknowledges some marriage dispensations, recalls previous queries that were not answered [by PF]. He lists [1] marriage blessings, mentioning a precedent of 13 July 1638 and the the Zamboni collection [i.e., Y(s1SZCollectio DeclarationumY(s0SZ]; [2] his decree of 6 October 1818 re the establishment of oratory [of the Sainte-Vierge] in a Québec district [Saint-Roch];
[3] his letter [to Consalvi] of 15 November 1822 [see SOCG 259] with queries on marriages before Protestant ministers, Madeleine's marriage, relics of St. Flavian and St. Felicity, indulgences, his indult of 11 May 1806 in favour of a female Marian congregation, extraordinary faculties re priests and clerics granted in 1808 and partially renewed in 1814, his predecessor [Hubert]'s Y(s1SZmandementY(s0SZ of [28 October] 1793 re holidays, the Québec ritual enclosed with said letter; [4] his letter [to Della Somaglia] of 20 December 1823 [see Varia 168], listing four [six in C 128] marriage cases but mentioning only two spouses, Paul, a widower, his son Démétrius and his [new] wife Balbina. The writer then lists four new queries re [5] marriage dispensations, with precedents of 5 August 1817, 7 March 1819, 23 January 1820, 12 May 1822;
[6] marriage dispensations, with precedent of 14 March 1824; [7] pensions for old parish priests, [8] the ceremony of baptism. PF notes (portion re Legislative Council forwarded to [the Sacred Congregation of the] Holy Office [i.e., to Mazio] on 18 [Y(s1SZrecteY(s0SZ 13] September 1825 [see Lettere 202]). MNs [answers to some of the writer's queries]: [5-6] prorogued, [7] faculties granted to the abp. for 15 years.
