Probably a translation into Italian of an original letter in English. The writer reminds the addressee of the "spirit of liberty" prevailing in America [i.e., the United States], where in the name of liberty people are made subject to other people. He maintains that the behaviour of the Irish clergy in Ireland must not be confused with that of many Irish priests in America. The latter, mainly ecclesiastics who were not wanted by their bp.s at home, used American freedom to mingle with the lowest populace and to misbehave. The writer's own experience in the United States shows that the French clergy has no "national antypathy" against the Irish, whereas they rightly complain about the Irish priests who are among them. As for the troubled state of the New York church, he blames C. Ffrench and [J.] Connolly's weakness for causing it.

Ffrench is a drunkard who mingles with the Irish populace, a libertine who seduced many women and perhaps fathered a son. His many misdeeds in Canada and in New York are proved by the deposition of a Canadian priest [Raby, of 6 September 1819; see SOCG 207], who happened to be in New York; by a letter of the abp. of Québec [Plessis, to Willcocks, of 24 March 1819; see SOCG 189], and by letters written by other Canadian priests [Lagarde, of 14 June and 6 July 1819; see SOCG 217-218; Desjardins, of 10 August and 11 December 1819; see SOCG 190-191]. The writer suggests that all troubles in New York be solved by entrusting the matter to [Lefèbvre de] Cheverus, bp. of Boston. PF notes. B: fol. 439r.
