Author and historian of the Canadian Coast Guard, Tom Appleton, gives a detailed history of the C.D. Howe, a hospital and Arctic patrol ship, on the occasion of its retirement from service.~The following interviews are also recorded on the original cassette: Dr. Roy Koener, author of the book "Across the Top of the World", discusses the scientific expedition across the Arctic from Alaska to Spitzbergen in 1968 to study ice formations, meteorology and cold-weather survival techniques; Gordon Stead with the Marine Administration of the Ministry of Transport tells of the work of the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker John A. MacDonald and its involvement in the rescue mission of the US Coast Guard ship, the North Wind; Jean Goodwill of the Cultural Affairs of the Dept. of Indian Affairs & Northern Development explains her efforts to promote Inuit and Indian culture by publishing a magazine written by aboriginals in syllabics; Morris Issac describes his efforts to publish his photographic essay on the life and culture of his people and his unsatisfying experience with the Company of Young Canadians and the National Film Board; Victor Morley, a pesticide expert with Agriculture Canada, explains the harmful effects of older pesticides such as DDT and the newer pesticides which are comparitively harmless to the northern environment.
