Ross Eaman interviews Alphonse Ouiment, former CBC President. Ouimet discusses: his birth in Montreal in 1908; his family background; his early education; engineering at McGill University; early interest in radio and television; early Canadian radio; his personality; his interest in literature, philosophy and general knowledge; his tutoring fellow students; his difficulty in entering McGill; differences between education at St. Mary's and McGill; working as an engineer at CBC; his work for the Canadian Television Company in 1932 as chief research engineer in charge of the television lab; Harold Goodrich and Doug West; the capabilities of his demonstration television; RCA and early TV patents; experiments in colour TV and stereo; television improvements; competition among American companies CBS, NBC and RCA in the 1940s; and programs and people used in TV demonstrations.~Ouimet comments on: his entry into the CRBC in 1934 in Ottawa as research engineer; Gordon Olive; the design of oscillators to measure frequencies; his transfer to CBC in 1936; the role of CBC and private stations in radio in the 1930s; the development of high power transmitters; 1939 becoming Operations Engineer; the 1939 Royal tour; Dr. Frigon's reaction to TV; his promotions to Assistant Chief and then Chief of Engineering; his 1947 European trip with Bud Walker to study TV developments; his work as Coordinator of Television; BBC television in the 1940s; French and American developments in TV; the American MTSC system; Canadian contributions to TV technology; restrictions on research and development; use of different frequencies; development of policy and organization of television in the CBC; commercial programming; Ford Theatre; CBC's struggle to control its commercial programs; Canadian production and talent; negotiating with American companies;
