Ross Eaman interviews J.T. Carlyle (Jack), former employee with the CNR radio network. Carlyle discusses: his early years and immigration to Canada; his family background; his first work in a coal mine; his work as clerk in the office of the CNR; his promotion to clerk in the office of the Vice-President; his work on shorthand at nightschool to become secretary to the chief clerk of the V.P.; description of J. Thornton's creation of a radio station in 1921; his transfer to become secretarial assistant to W.H. Swift, first director of radio for the CNR; Walter Anderson as first radio operator on CNR trains in 1923; description of early radio in CNR; opening of CNRO in 1924; first network program between stations OA (Ottawa) and Northern Electric's CHRY (Montreal); creation of first CN radio call letters; tests to see if radio penetrated ground; development of CN radio on trains; his promotion to travelling supervisor of radio for the CNR; CNR programming and special events, including synchronized live broadcasts of coast to coast choir broadcasts; first broadcasts of big bands; Jack Benny Orchestra in Montreal; St. Patrick's Cathedral broadcasts; H.M.S. Molly's arrival in Montreal and broadcasts of band from the quarterdeck; Carlyle's early work as announcer on these special programs; first broadcast of the carillon from the Peace Tower with carbon mikes; Mount Allison Ladies' College choir; announcement of war in 1939; funeral of Sir Arthur Curry in 1946; his move to the CRBC in 1933 with station CRCO as clerk/announcer/operator; his responsibilities at CRCO (Ottawa); his transfer to CBW (Windsor) as manager for a year; his work as assistant traffic manager in Toronto until 1952; pictures Carlyle brings out; Walter Anderson, Director of Program Clearance; Rideau Hall New Year's Eve and MacKenzie King broadcasts; Young Liberal convention and King's speech; and use of radio lines and Carlyle's work as traffic manager.~Carlyle also comments on: A.W. Jackson, head of Toronto transmissions before the set-up of radio station; his work as president of staff council (Toronto); creation of the 20 year association and credit union; AMOS 'N ANDY; production of detective dramas; ALFIE ANDY AND SANTA CLAUS Christmas program in Montreal; Royal Tour of 1939 in Quebec; his salary when he first joined the CBC in 1936; 50th anniversary of the opening of the CNR station in Ottawa in 1924; blattnerphone in Ottawa; his first work in the studio control booth; the Northern Messenger; colleagues Rolly Anderson, Scotty Ewing, Morris Maden; working for the CBC in the early days; creation of the ABC network in the US; and his retirement in 1963. <52mn 30s>
