Peterson discusses: his birth and Scandanavian background; the social situation in Regina and the prairies while he was growing up; his education; an anecdote about one of his compositions on Louis Riel; and anecdote about a former schoolmate; his education at Luther College, Regina; his education at Western University near Chicago, Illinois; social attitudes in Chicago and the differences between Chicago and Regina; the Regina riot; the Canadian government and attitudes towards the West; differences between the United States and Canada; the Cold War in the United States and Canada; the novel "Chipmunk"; Peterson's early writing and writers in Canada; his reasons for turning to radio; his freedom to write while in the army; his first script being accepted by the CBC in 1939; his decision to become a writer during his last year at Western University; his move to Toronto in 1938; his early writing attempts; the rise of Nazism and Fascism; Canadian attitudes towards Hitler; his being drafted into the Army in 1942; his radio dramas about the war; the nature of his writing; Esse Ljungh and Peterson's play ONE ROOM; his need for freedom and view of the writer as wrestler and rug salesman; his methods of working and application of anthropology to writing; his plans for a book about Canadian society; the cohesion of the Canadian people during the war; Joe Katona as an illustration of Peterson's sources and ways of writing; his work "A Child's Song Battle", a chamber opera for children illustrating his search for language; creative swearing and Tommy Tweed; the real needs of writers; how he, Lister Sinclair and Tommy Tweed were viewed as radicals in the radio drama group; the genesis of and reaction to BURLAP BAGS; the effect on Peterson of his brother's death; the lack of communication in Canadian society; great writers; and the corruption of freedom by radio bureaucrats and hucksters. <2h 43mn>
