Paul Follis interviews Larry Macdonald, CBC editor. Macdonald discusses: his education; his interest in reading and radio; his journalistic experience with the army during WWII; initial work in radio with CHAB Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan from 1950-1953; interest in writing plays for CBC radio in the early 1950s with his wife; work at radio station CFRA in Ottawa from 1953-1955; transfer to CBOT Ottawa in the regional news department; coverage of pipeline debate in 1955-1956 when the Speaker of the House was forced to resign; early days of covering news from Parliament Hill before membership in the press gallery; status of Parliament Hill reporters today and problems due to numbers, and difficulty of getting film and audio from Parliament Hill on the air; tasks of reporter in CBC regional news operation; description of regional news staff working conditions; changes during expansion in 1950s and 1960s; influence of men such as Bill Hogg on reporting style of radio news and news writing techniques for radio and television; competition between radio and TV in the 1950s; his promotion as acting editor of local TV news operations in the mid-1960s; 1970, Assignment Editor of CBC news; 1977, Editor of CBC news program THIS WEEK IN PARLIAMENT; CBC news operation in general; and private network news operations. <28mn>
