Paul Follis interviews Tom Earle, Supervisor of CBC Radio News Operations, Parliament Hill. Earle discusses: his background; his early interest in radio broadcasting; his work as a press agent aboard CP Empress oceanlines; his joining the CBC in 1953 in Montreal in television news; his move to Ottawa in 1955 to cover news from Parliament Hill; his exclusion from the parliamentary press gallery; friction between print and electronic media in mid 1950s; the eventual granting of membership for radio and tv personnel into the parliamentary press gallery; work as first CBC reporter to gain membership; expansion of the Ottawa news service; his appointment to the position of Ottawa News Bureau Chief in 1967; work as CBC correspondent in London in 1971; the role of a foreign correspondnent; assignment of covering Northern Ireland crisis from 1971-77; his move back to Ottawa to run the radio news operation on Parliament Hill; work as head of the news program THE HOUSE; coordination of Ottawa news operation with other regional operations; problems of getting news from Parliament Hill to the air in the 1950s; initial use of film for interviews for news coverage, for example 1956 pipeline debate; importance of CBC correspondents on Parliament Hill; politicians reactions to actuality news coverage on Parliament Hill; his role as BBC's chief Canadian stringer; comparison of the CBC and BBC news services; his work in CBC news service; the calibre of personnel and of service; outstanding news directors; and criticism of CBC structure. <58mn>
