Heather Moore interviews Darce Fardy, former director of the CBC newsroom in St. John's, Newfoundland. Fardy discusses: his birth in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1932; his early education; his career beginning with the CBC as a radio reporter in the newsroom in 1952; duties as a national reporter; NEWS ROUNDUP; CANADIAN CHRONICLE; his role as the first legislative reporter in Newfoundland at the radio station RONF; the staff at the CBC newsroom in St. John's after takeover; his becoming Director of the Newsroom in 1960; THE DOYLE BULLETIN; Joey Smallwood's show THE BARRELMAN; RONF's live broadcasts of the debates of the National Assembly on Newfoundland and Confederation; his being seconded to the UN and his duties in the newsroom there; early announcers at CBC St. John's; local versus national programming; unionization and the American Newswriter's Guild; introduction of television in Newfoundland and CJON-TV (private); his promotion to head of television news and producer of newscasts in 1964; Director of Television in 1972; local TV productions such as HERE AND NOW and LAND AND SEA; and conflict between community programming and network programming. <39mn 30s>
