Canadian singer and actor Bill Van Evera is interviewed by Lorraine Thomson. Van Evera talks about growing up in Toronto as part of a vaudeville family. He describes joining the singing group The Four Grads and their various bookings including winning $500 on the talent show PICK THE STARS, two years on the JACKIE RAE SHOW, a six-month tour of England where they appeared for two weeks with Mel Torme, and recording an album. After the group's breakup, he did a variety of jobs including appearing in the chorus on SHOWTIME and singing with his four siblings as The Van Evera Brothers. In 1960 he formed his own singing group called The Billy Van Four with [Pattie] Brooks, who became his wife, Jack Northmore, and [Les Gillespie]. The group appeared in shows for the Variety Department of the CBC, toured England and did jingle work. From 1962 to 1966 he also appeared on the late-night entertainment program NIGHTCAP. When both The Billy Van Four and Van Evera's marriage dissolved, he got work in Los Angeles on THE SONNY AND CHER SHOW (1971 to 1975), did commercials for Colt 45 Malt Liquor, appeared on PARTY GAME (1969 to 1979) and produced and starred in the children's series HILARIOUS HOUSE OF FRIGHTENSTEIN (1971). Since 1990 he has run a company that markets acting roles to talent agents. Van Evera also comments on the lack of a "star system" in Canada, that government regulation of Canadian content is insulting to artists, and commends the role of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) Fraternal in providing benefits to its members.
