Second program in a three-part television documentary series about the history of Canadian military aviation. This program uses archival footage, stills and interviews to tell the story of efforts to create a Canadian air force after the First World War, peacetime aviation contributions to Canada in such areas as aerial cartographic and photographic surveys, firefighting and fisheries patrols, early efforts by the Canadian government to put military aviation under the control of the army, the creation of the Royal Canadian Air Force on 1 April 1924, the difficulties encountered in establishing a strong air force in the face of political indifference and military infighting, bush flying and its role in opening up the Canadian North, the rapid transformation of the peacetime RCAF into a viable fighting force with the start of the Second World War in 1939, RCAF training with the Royal Air Force in England, RCAF service in 1939 and 1940, Canadians who joined the RAF, the evacuation at Dunkirk in 1940 and the creation of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in 1939.
