Television public affairs program with host Frank Willis. Profile of the French statesman, Charles De Gaulle, beginning with his childhood, proceeding through his military years and concluding with his political career. Presented are clips of interviews with the following list of old friends and collegues, who recall their meetings with De Gaulle and describe various aspects of his character: Georges Cattui, biographer and old family friend; Jean Auburtin, close friend; Paul Reynaud, Ex-Prime Minister of France; Duncan Grinnell Milne, British liaison officer assigned to De Gaulle in 1940; Pierre Billotte, De Gaulle's wartime Chief of Staff and subsequent leader of the Gaullist Party; Genevieve Anthonioz, niece; Emmanuel D'Astier, leading member of the resistance in southern France; François Mauriac, writer; Gaston Palewski, friend and trusted subordinate and Georges Pompidou, Prime Minister of France. Program includes narrated excerpts of De Gaulle's memoirs with still photos of the following people and places: De Gaulle's mother and father; De Gaulle as a child and soldier; Ingolstadt Prison in 1917; wedding picture of De Gaulle and bride; and De Gaulle standing in orchards surrounding his country home in Colombey-des-deux Eglises. Noteworthy sequences include: De Gaulle addressing his countrymen (in French); war scenes from May 1940, of people fleeing bombed cities; war troops marching under L'Arc de Triomphe and Hitler meeting France's head of state Henri Pétain, with a translated voice over of De Gaulle stating that France will not give in to defeat; arms and munitions being dropped by parachute to resistance fighters in southern France; a marching parade of troops during the time of Pétain's leadership; Franklin Roosevelt and De Gaulle at the Casablanca Conference of 1943; De Gaulle's victory Parade in Paris on August 27, 1944; his country home in Colombey-des-deux Eglises and De Gaulle amidst pressing crowds as he is called into power in 1958.
