Television documentary on the war period in Germany between 1940 and 1944.~Covered are: popular wartime views of the German people; Nazi propaganda; the impact of the invasion of Russia on Germany society; the wartime Nazi leadership; the impact on Germans of the defeat at Stalingrad; the results of Allied bombing of Germany; Hitler and Goebbels reactions to losses; recreation and art inside Nazi Germany; the SS; resistance to the persecution of Jews; political resistance against Hitler; the plot to kill Hitler; the trial of the conspirators; and the Berlin Home Guard.~Included are scenes of: wild, massive crowds greeting the return of the victorious German army marching through the Brandenburg gates; the song, Rosamunde, being sung; German social life; the comic duo of [Tramm] und Heller in routine; German newsreel promoting euthanasia for the mentally retarded; Goebbels speech announcing the invasion of Russia; popular German song hailing German soldiers; Goering touring the Ukraine; German citizens donating fur garments to the Wermacht; Ukrainian slave labourers working in factories; Ukrainian women being picked by Germans for domestic work; Martin Bormann; Goebbels speaking inspirationally at a mass rally with Speer and Hess present; foreign prisoners in striped uniforms carrying coffins away in a German city; Major Otto Reimer parading his soldiers on a boulevard, his arm out in a Nazi salute; and Goebbels in oration at a ceremony for the Home Guard.~Comments are made by: Hans Kehrl, Ministry of Economics 1938-1943; Christabel Bielenberg, married to a German; Albert Speer; SS Adjuntant to Hitler, Richard Schultze-Kossens; Traudl Junge, Hitler's secretary 1943-1945; Hertha Beese, Berlin housewife; Emmi Bonhoeffer, Berlin housewife; Dr. Otto John, member of the Resistance; and Major Otto Reimer.~Also examined is the role of German women during the war years. <60mn>
