Television documentary on the life and death of Canadian artist Tom Thomson narrated by Thom Benson. A re-enactment of Thomson's life and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death on July 8, 1917 is followed by a discussion of a current controversy concerning Thomson's final resting place. Filmed at Canoe Lake, Algonquin Park, where the drowned body of Thomson was found, the dramatization is based on the original documents and research of Judge William T. Little. Archival photographs and drawings illustrate Thomson's childhood in Leith, Ontario and early working life in Seattle and later Toronto; scenes of Canada's northern landscape interspliced with Thomson's paintings provide a visual background to the narrative which outlines the artist's chosen lifestyle and explores his inner motivation. The unresolved mystery surrounding Thomson's death and burial, sparked by the posthumous recognition of his work, is examined through commentary and interviews with Judge Little, Dr. Nobel Sharp of the Ontario Forensic Laboratory and others. Footage of the cemetery sites at Canoe Lake and Leith, Ontario, together with shots of the exhumed skull and photographs of Thomson used in the 1956 inquiry illustrate the discussion. <60mn>
