First program in a six part series on Canadian culture. The past struggles and the continuing challenges of identifying, creating and protecting an indigenous Canadian culture. Examining the Canadian art industry, the focus is on art galleries, museums, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Codco School of Arts and the National Ballet in Canada. Interviews are held with: Yvon Deschamps, Quebec performer; Jean-Paul L'Allier, Minister of Cultural Affairs; Edythe Goodridge, Arts and Culture Centre Newfoundland; Peter Swann, former director of the Royal Ontario Museum; Noah Torno, Chairman Board of Trustees; Hamilton Stuffon, theatre director; Greg Curnoe, Art Gallery of Ontario; the Honourable Hugh Faulkner, Secretary of State; and Herschel Hardin, author of "A Nation Unaware". An excerpt is shown from the play "Taxi". Program concludes with children in Edmonton commenting on Canadian and American television. <60mn>
