Left profile of Judge Haliburton on horseback. The proportions are awkward -- possibly deliberately so. Mr. Torre has not been identified. Haliburton is probably Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796-1865) who was a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia from 1841-56, rather than Sir Brenton Halliburton (1774-1860) who was Chief Justice of Nova Scotia from 1833-59., To secure his posting T. C. Haliburton actively cultivated the friendship of Lord Falkland (through Lieut-Col. Charles Richard Fox, who married Lady Falkland's sister Mary). The Haliburton and Falkland families are recorded travelling together around the province (New York Albion Sept. 14, 1844; the Novascotian Sept. 1, 1845)., Augusta, Susan, and Laura are mentioned in the inscriptions of 1990-207-73X, -81X, -90X, 99X, and -102X. They are daughters of T. C. Haliburton. Emma Haliburton, another of his daughters, executed three of the works in the album (1990-207-86X, -106X, and -107X)., Lady Falkland was in Halifax with her husband, who was governor of Nova Scotia from 1840-46., The inscription on the secondary support is in Lady Falkland's handwriting.
