This is the fifth and final state of the print published after 1795, perhaps on the occasion of Amhert's death in 1797., The first state of the print was published in 1766, subsequent states in subsequent states the inscription was changed, otherwise the image is the same., See Facing History (National Archives of Canada, 1993), p. 10, cat. no. 10 for information concerning the sitter and the print.

Commander in Chief of the British Forces in America from 1758 to 1764; created Baron Amherst of Holmes date in Kent 1776; Governor of Guernsey; Colonel of the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards, and Colonel in Chief of the 60th or Royal American Regiment; One of His Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council; General Commanding in Chief the British Troops in England from 1778 to 1782; and again from January 1793 to February 1795. Published by J. & J. BOYDELL, cheapside; & at the Shakespeare Gallery, Pall-Mall, London.", Inscription: The print bears a blind stamp collectors mark of the Canada Steamship Line l.l.corner.
