Television public affairs program hosted by Frank Willis. A documentary report on Indians in Manitoba - city vs reservation. The first part of the program looks at the Indian community in Winnipeg. George Ronald interviews a variety of people, both Indian and those involved with their welfare and explores some of the social, economic, andcultural issues. Interviews include: Marion Meadmore, a Salteaux married to a white man and living in Winnipeg; Walter Noel, a Sioux and accomplished athlete; Lloyd Landon, Director of the Indian Métis Committee of the Winnipeg Welfare Council; Fraser Earle of the Canadian Council of Chrisitians and Jews; and A.G. Leslie, Supervisor of Manitoba's 53 Indian reserves. Winnipeg sequences include street scenes; young Indian rock musicians performing at the Winnipeg Friendship Centre; slum housing and crowded badly-kept residential ghettos; and Tom Stevenson, gifted Indian pianist, at practice.~The second part of the film focuses on living conditions on the Peguis Reserve. George Ronald visits and talks with residents, hearing the problems and satisfactions of the Indians who choose to remain on the reservations rather than move into the cities. Walter Cochrane is a Sioux who lives in Winnipeg but remains closely attached to his family in the reserve. Reverend Ian Harvey, United Church Minister; Inspector Jack Webster of the Winnipeg Morality Squad; Jean Legasse, Director of Manitoba's Social and Economic Research Office; and, J.P. Tully, Superintendant of the Fisher River Agency, all give their views on the predicament of Indians and their assimilation and acceptance into Canadian society. Sequences on the reserve; include: a mother of ten talking about living conditions for her and her family; a farmer talking about his approach to working the land; schools, hospital and church with voice-over commentary on the educational and medical facilities on the reserve; and the impact of the Christian religion in the lives of Indians on the reservations. <60mn>
