A bronze medal sculptured for the Paris Mint by French Medallist, René Mérelle. The medal commemorates the life and work of English Mathematician and Physicist, Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726). He is best known for writing his "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica," in which he laid out his Laws of Motion and the Universal Law of Gravitation.

The obverse side of the medal displays a bust of Newton facing a lunar crescent bearing his name. Behind him is the house in Woolsthorpe, England where he was born.

The reverse side of the medal is engraved with Newton's place of birth and death, as well as his date of birth and death. Beneath the dates is displayed an image of a piece of parchment bearing Newton's diagram of the Principle of Movement of the Moon about the Earth. The parchment is weighted down by an apple which recalls the famous anecdote that cites that Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head and he immediately thought of the Universal Law of Gravitation.
