Part of a film which shows how ambulance dogs are used to find wounded men on the battlefields and then transport them to hospitals. The film also shows the use of horses to transport the wounded to hospitals. The footage begins with a shot of a man, dressed in a uniform, which a Red Cross armband, kneeling next to a dog which wears a cloth Red Cross sign wrapped around his torso. An intertitle reads: "These dogs are of invaluable help in the search for the wounded on the battlefield". Men in uniform, with Red Cross armbands, walk with dogs in a field. One of the men has a dog on a leash. The other guides a dog who pulls a low four-wheeled cart.One man lets his dog off the leash and the dog runs down an hill. Another dog runs near him. The dogs run back up the hill and then one dog finds a wounded man lying in the field. The dog uses his mouth to remove the wounded man's cap and carries it up the hill. Both dogs run to the two medics and one man takes the cap. The other puts one of the dogs back on the leash and they all set off, leading the small cart, down the hill to the wounded man. The medics load the wounded man ont the cart, which is too short for him. His legs and one arm dangle from it. The next interitle reads "The Alpine ambulance service". This is followed by a scene of a group of men wearing Red Cross armbands are in a hilly area. They load packs onto the backs of several horses. A dog with a Red Cross sign on its body is among the group. The men lead a group of pack horses up a steep hill. Some men ride and others walk alongside, as dogs run about. The next intertitle reads: "After preliminary dressing, the wounded are taken to the nearest field ambulance whence they are drafted to various hospitals." A longshot shows men putting a wounded man on a stretcher and other men are with horses. Wounded men seated on special carriers on horseback are guided back down a hill. They are brought up a hill to a small wooden building in mountainous terrain. Men help the wounded down from the horses and take them into a tent marked with a Red Cross symbol.

1. Pathescope library inventory lists a two-reel film EUROPEAN WAR DOGS about ambulance dogs who search for wounded soldiers on battlefields.~2. Credits also say "Province of Ontario Pictures" which identifies the Ontario Motion Picture Bureau as the distributor.~3. There is no head title and no logos or other identifying marks to confirm production company.~4. The Ontario Motion Picture Bureau catalogue entitled Complete Catalogue of Safety Standard Films, February 1926, lists the film at number 4038 as a 1-reel Pathé film entitled EUROPEAN WAR DOGS.
