Specific instructions were also issued to William Henry by the Governor of Newfoundland. The Pegasus came close to shipwreck on these rocks (Byam Martin, p.50). The Pegasus was one of six ships assigned in 1786 to duty on the Newfoundland and Labrador coasts. The orders of her companion ship, the Rose, were "to protect and regulate the Fishery" from Cape Race, Newfoundland, north and to visit the Magdalen Islands. The Pegasus was to be under the orders of Captain Harvey of the Rose and was to call at St. John's in September.
