Lac Ste. Anne (Alberta) is located about 45 miles northwest of the city of Edmonton. Lac Ste. Anne, known as Manitou Sakahigan (Lake of the Spirit) to the Métis and First Nations, is the site of an annual religious pilgrimage.
A Roman Catholic mission was established in 1844. By 1887, the buffalo had disappeared and the lake lost importance as a traditional gathering place. Father Jean-Marie Lestanc, the Superior at St. Albert decided to build a shrine to honour St. Anne the grandmother of Jesus. The first pilgrimage was held in 1889.
