A five part radio play by Marian Waldman about the eccentric Root family, narrated by Alexandra Root who is played by Nonnie Griffin. In this episode Alex is ill and delerious in Dawson City. Prince and a pregnant Lally are there. They had come to look for Clemens but found Alex instead. When it is discovered that Alex has smallpox they leave her at the Cyclop's roadhouse. The Cyclop is Beau, a horribly disfigured man who runs a trading post on Rabbit Creek. He and Prince salt claims in the area and sell hardware to the miners. Prince gives Beau Alex's ruby in exchange for watching her. While curing Alex with bloodroot Beau rapes and impregnates her. When Prince returns in the spring he has news, Rabbit Creek really is a gold mine. He has told the miners he salted their claims so they will pull up stakes and leave. The miners retaliate by burning the roadhouse. Alex escapes but returns for Beau. Beau torn with guilt over the rape gives her the ruby, a raft and his trading supplies and leaves. Alex then gives birth to a stillborn baby. Shortly, Lally arrives. Prince had abandoned her saying she was too pregnant to travel. When Lally dies after giving birth to a boy, Alex takes him and leaves. Prince and Alex reunite in Winnipeg. When Alex presents Prince with the boy she has named Starfield he assumes it is Beau's son.
