Interview of Bill Baker about his early memories of radio and his career in radio. He talks about: CFRB; building his first radio; working for the Independent Telephone Company in Toronto making radios; the purchase of the company circa 1925 by Rogers Batteryless; the building of Rogers' station CFRB in 1927; Ted Rogers' construction of the first electric radios in the world; Rogers' perfecting of a tube that made alternating current tubes possible, eliminating hum; early CFRB broadcasts, both remote and in the studio; CFRB's affiliation with CBS starting in 1930; improvements in radio circuits and other technology; doing remote broadcasts; the involvement of the Bell Telephone Company and Canadian National Railways in early broadcasting; early radio stations such as CNRT; CFRB's role in doing large-scale broadcasts such as General Motors hockey broadcasts and symphony broadcasts, a role that was taken over by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation when it commenced operation; the sponsorship of hockey broadcasts by McLaren Advertising and McLaren's opting to stay with CFRB rather than going to the CCBC for some years after the CBC began; Foster Hewitt; dance bands; CFRB announcers such as the popular Jim Hunter and John Collingwood Reade; his job as program director; music broadcasts by David Ouchterlony; George Wilson and the Dumbells; the program ROUND THE MARBLE ARCH; the Toronto Star's radio station CFCA; sports announcer Wes McKnight; football broadcasts by Foster Hewitt and Harry "Red" Foster; Harry Sedgewick and his role in making CFRB profitable instead of just being a means of advertising the radio sets made by Rogers Batteryless; Bert Pearl and the Crushie Singers; Gordon Sinclair; and the program ONTARIO PANORAMA. Baker also talks about the bulky equipment that was needed during the early days of remote broadcasts and CFRB's production of three five-minute shows a week from Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe's home in Callander, Ontario, fed to CBS in New York.~Baker shows interviewer Bill McNeil a handwritten script for the first CFRB broadcast on February 19, 1927, and a photograph of the CFRB staff at the time of the first broadcast.
