Amherst to Monckton. A.L.S. Acknowledging a letter of the 8th, with enclosures from Captain Campbell, including an Indian council. He has already received information on the latter and has communicated with Sir Wm. Johnson, and the commanding officers at Oswego, Niagara and Detroit. He thanks Monckton for setting out for Philadelphia. He cannot believe that the Indians would entertain so wild a scheme, yet would not neglect anything necessary to disappoint them in every part of "their vain, inconsistent and treacherous project." He has no doubt that if the Indians make an attempt on Fort Pitt or any other of the garrisoned forts, they will be well received. They must receive no mercy. "The mischief they have been contriving should fall heavy on their own heads."

Sir Wm. Johnson, he hopes, is on his road to Detroit, and Major Gladwin has started from Oswego. But while making full preparations, he is persuaded that it will all pass without the Indians attempting anything. He authorizes Monckton to use his name in persuading the Pennsylvania Government to furnish what is necessary to complete the communication. He has just heard that Captain Charteris of the R.A. Regiment has shot himself in a fit of insanity.
