Special edition marking the centenary of the Victoria Cross, details of the conditions under which it can be won, adn the personal stories of a few of the Canadian winners. Lister Sinclair discusses the word courage, its meaning, connotations and implications. Liston McIlhagga of Winnipeg gives a vivid account of men who display gallantry in wartime and who were all from Winnipeg's Pine Street. The street has been renamed Valour Road. Colonel Charles Perry Stacey, director of the historical section of the Canadian Army, tells the story of Private Timothy O'Hea, who was the only person who won the Victoria Cross for an act of bravery performed in Canada and a deed not performed in the presence of a human enemy. Private O'Hea was serving in the British rifle brigade in Canada in 1866. He saved a burning train car filled with ammunition and kept it from exploding. Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Cecil Ingersoll Merritt, commander of the South Saskatchewan Regiment at Dieppe, recalls his receiving the Victoria Cross from King George VI. Narrator Thom Benson talks about Jamie Richardson of Chilliwack, British Columbia, who in 1916 played the Canadian Scots regiment over the top of the trenches into enemy territory with his bagpipes. Ernest Alva Smith of Westminster, British Columbia, recalls how he won the Victoria Cross in the Italian Campaign at the Salvio River. <20mn>
