Interview by Raymond Stone with Eric Hehner, Customs and Excise specialist, who was sent to Whitehorse in the 1940s to solve a customs problem surrounding the pipeline carrying aviation fuel along the route of the White Pass and Yukon Railway line from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, Alaska. He talks about the history of the rail line and the addition of the fuel line pointing out risk of fire from wood-burning engines. After the war it was necessary to settle the ownership of the pipeline, but since it was a gift to Canada from the US Army the tax collector insisted the duty on the steel be paid. He describes how he walked the line and hitched a ride on a hand-car which hit a bear near Lake Labarge. Having solved the tax problem, and he goes to describes the introduction of sealed shipping containers by the railroad to counteract the pilferage which occurred at each of many border stops and customs inspections and recalls the first container ship specially designed for the Whitepass railroads. <30mn>
