Press conference held by an ad hoc committee opposed to the recommendations made by the Royal Commission on the Economic Union and Development Prospects headed by the Honouralbe D.S. MacDonald. Representing the Committee are: Lynne [Kaye], National Action Committee on the Status of Women; James Lorimer, Daniel [Drache], Duncan Cameron, and Geoff Patterson of the Social Planning Council of Toronto; Gil Levine, Research Director of the Canadian Union of Public Employees; Sam Silverstone of the Makivik Corporation; Pierre Beaulne of the Quebec Teachers Federation, Bishop [Leroux]; and Mr. [Easton] of the National Farmers Union, who announce the release of their publication, "The Other MacDonald Report". In an opening statement and a subsequent question period, the following topics and issues are discussed: recommendations of the MacDonald Commission and its omissions relating to grass roots opinion; the inquiry model followed by the MacDonald Commission; government approach to bank failures and its motives for the bail-out; economic policies that punish the poor, the sick, and the frail; claims by C.U.P.E. of poor treatment by the MacDonald Commission; rising poverty; alleged militarization of the economy; the Makivik Corporation and its submission to the MacDonald Commission relating to native demands in northern Quebec; alleged slant of MacDonald Commission towards business; resignation of Gerard Docquier from the Commission; and the difficulties and hardships being experienced by Canadian farmers.
