The third program of the series chronicles former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson's personal encounter with the Great War. At 18, Pearson began his war career with a patriotic fervour and sense of adventure that quickly diminished as he experienced the horror of war in the deserts of Egypt, the mountains of Greece, and in ill-fated Salonica. Disillusioned with these experiences, he applied to transfer to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916 and a year later he was relocated to an officer cadet batallian training camp at Oxford, England. Poet Robert Graves was Pearson's training instructor and in this program recalls his impressions of the young man. Pearson continues to tell of his wartime experiences and impressions, including his first solo flight and his "short and inglorious flying career".~Film footage includes: troops embarking in England; troops in Egypt; a camp reunited by storm; Turks in snow; Pearson visiting Oxford, England; a Zeppelin raid; the American entry into the war; Armistice headlines; and a celebration in Toronto. <27mn 55s>
