The memoirs of the late Lester B. Pearson, Canada's 14th Prime Minister, begin to unfold in this initial segment of the series as Pearson candidly recalls his childhood and youth prior to WWI. His warm personality and sense of humour emerge in this personal account which includes his memories of his grandfather, the Sheriff of Dufferin County, Ontario; his first awareness of girls; and his first electoral defeat in a high school election. Pearson's father, a minister, strongly influenced him in his moral and religious calling, but even more so in his love of sports. Pearson speaks of his life-long expectations of going to college which eventually led him to the University of Toronto in 1914.~A montage of stills introduces each program in the series and includes pictures of Pearson as a baby, teenager, undergraduate, soldier, airman, post-grad, teacher, diplomat, opposition leader, and Prime Minister. Additional stills in this program are of Irish immigrants in the mid-1800s; a late-1800s Methodist meeting; a barrel organ in 1900; the interior of an Ontario schoolhouse; children on Victoria Day in the early 1900s; the Royal Tour of the Duke and Duchess of York in 1902; the Pearson family; and Pearson's Hamilton Collegiate days in Hamilton, Ontario. Film footage shows Pearson's return to Peterborough, Ontario as Prime Minister giving a speech. <27mn 55s>
