This program is a critical look at the Parliamentary Press Gallery. There are comments by Allister Fraser, Judy LaMarsh, Heber Smith, George McIlraith, Max Saltsman, Joe Maculoso, Frank Howard and Colin Cameron on the responsibilities of the news media, its methods, the frequent misinterpretation by the media of events and, as a result, the tension and antagonism that develops between the press and Members of Parliament. The Parliamentary Press Gallery is open to those who write or broadcast to recognized Canadian or foreign media. There are 14 French and 106 English members, serving 13 French and 102 English daily newspapers. Lester B. Pearson criticizes the news media, especially scrums and says that there is a natural and inevitable hostility between the head of govenrment and the media. The program takes a look at the dispute that occurred in 1962 between John Diefenbaker and Southam News reporter Charles King, when King reported on a fishing trip in the Yukon. There is also a short analysis by Pierre Trudeau about his treatment by the news media. He says that he pretends not to be very sensitive and that he decided that it would not matter much if the news media said he was a "great guy" or a "big bum". Anthony Westell of the Globe and Mail, Tom Earle of the CBC and Ron Collister of the CBC talk about what makes news, the importance of personal contacts, the news media as a built-in opposition, the decision to allow radio and television reporters into the press gallery, the accomplishments of radio and the preference politicians have for television. Amédée Gaudreault of Le Soleil speaks about the difficulties in reporting for the French media. There are additional general comments about the news media by Stanley Knowles and Grace MacInnis. <28mn 30s>
