This program, the second in the series, looks at the Member of Parliament and his or her constituency. Eugene Whelan comments on the qualities that make a good MP, the demands of the constituency versus the requirements of the House of Commons and the argument that Members of Parliament are elected to the constituency and therefore must identify with their ridings. Next is an examination of five ridings across Canada with comments by each of their representatives: Jack Davis of Coast Capilano on the people who make up his riding, the importance of interaction between the MP and the voter, and his weekly trips to and from Ottawa; Jack Horner of Acadia, about dealing with provincial and municipal governments, his concerns about trade with the western provinces, and the interest of his constituency in unity and national defence; David Lewis of York South about the racial makeup of his riding, his concerns over immigration and the problems an MP faces in reaching each voter in a large metropolitan area; Gus Blouin of Saguenay about the problems that arise because of the immense size of the constituency; and Donny MacInnis of Cape Breton South about the people and professions in his riding and the movement by the young out of the riding and into the larger centres. Redistribution is mentioned briefly. Jean Chrétien, Bud Sherman, Stanley Knowles and Gordon Churchill comment about the MP and his or her responsibilities. <28mn 30s>
