Stevenson comments on various topics on which he reported as Ottawa correspondent for the Manchester Guardian newspaper. He says that the Liberal Party in Britain was interested in the fate of the Naval Bill presented in parliament by Sir Robert Borden. He describes William Lyon Mackenzie King at that time as a "very ardent young idealist, who was full of zeal for reforming the Canadian Liberal Party under the ways of Lloyd George and other British liberals".~Stevenson thought that King was a bi-sexual, which he explained was different than a homosexual, in that he had a male sex drive but the temperament of a female. He says that King had a great fondness for female company and society and an aversion to male society. Others, he said, shared his view. Stevenson thought that King was terrified of disfavour and loss of votes in Quebec which was mostly Roman Catholic. He would not support the League of Nation's call for sanctions against Italy after Mussolini invaded Abyssinia. Stevenson explains the significance of King's repudiation of Dr. Riddele on the matter of these sanctions. He states that "it was the failure to assert The League of Nations' power and to uphold the principals of collective security that emboldened Hitler to invade the Rhineland". Stevenson thought that if King had acted with courage and imagination he could have helped to postpone World War Two. <10mn>
